Why Insurance Companies Hate Me, But Clients Love Me

Insurance Companies hate me, clients love me

I began my career in insurance claims over 25 years ago. As an independent property damage insurance claim adjuster, I handled losses caused by water, mold, fire, hurricanes, vandalism, theft, and wind damage.

Back then, things were different. I had the discretion to meet homeowners and business owners face-to-face, look them in the eye, evaluate their damage, settle their claims, and shake their hands. No middle manager was telling me how much to pay or what to deny.

Florida insurance policies were also different, offering broader coverage, fewer loopholes, and clear promises to policyholders. On average, I inspected and settled five new claims per day, closing approximately 360 claims annually with virtually zero reopens. Both my employer and the policyholders I served rated my work highly.

In those early years, I was proud to help insurance carriers live up to their promises. I was respected by adjusters and management alike.

The Shift

Eventually, I moved to a Florida insurance company for a better financial opportunity. But I quickly became disillusioned. Their strict interpretations of policies meant more denials and reduced payouts. Customers weren’t happy, even if management was.

When I returned to independent adjusting, the industry had undergone significant changes. The concept of float—delaying claim payments to earn interest on the money—had taken hold. Carriers began hiring layers of mid-level staff whose primary role was to cut estimates and minimize payouts.

It became clear that if I wanted to continue working for insurers, I’d have to prioritize their financial interests over the needs of policyholders.

Choosing a Different Path

That was my turning point. I decided to stop helping insurance companies protect their profits and instead dedicate my career to helping policyholders.

Of course, the moment I made that choice, everything changed. The same adjusters, managers, and contractors who once respected me now saw me as the enemy. Why? Because I was no longer helping them save money, I was helping policyholders get the money they were entitled to.

It’s ironic. When I helped insurers increase their profits, I was a “good guy.” However, when I used my experience and knowledge to help homeowners and business owners, the very people who pay the premiums that keep insurers in business, I became their adversary.

Why Policyholders Love Me

Insurance companies may hate me now, but my clients don’t. Homeowners and business owners I’ve helped over the years appreciate having someone on their side who knows the system inside out and isn’t afraid to fight for what’s fair.

And that’s why I do what I do today: because policyholders deserve someone who puts their interests first.
